Pecados que importan sólo mientras se cometen

Dear Marlon
I’m praying that you’ll buy ON THE ROAD and make a movie of it. Don’t worry about the structure, I know to compress and re-arrange the plot a bit to give a perfectly acceptable movie-type structure: making it into one all-inclusive trip instead of the several voyages coast-to-coast in the book, one vast round trip from New York to Denver to Frisco to Mexico to New Orleans to New York again. I visualize the beautiful shots could be made with the camera on the front seat of the car showing the road (day and night) unwinding into the windshield, as Sal and Dean yak. I wanted you to play the part because Dean (as you know) is no dopey hotrodder but a real intelligent (in fact Jesuit) Irishman. You play Dean and I’ll play Sal (Warner Bros. mentioned I play Sal) and I’ll show you how Dean acts in real life, you couldn’t possibly imagine it without seeing a good imitation. Fact, we can go visit him in Frisco, or have him come down to L.A. still a real frantic cat but nowadays settled down with his final wife saying the Lord’s Prayer with his kiddies at night… as you’ll see when you read the play BEAT GENERATION. All I want out of this is to be able to establish myself and by mother a trust fund for life, so I can really go roaming around the world writing about Japan, India, France etc… I Want to be free to write what comes out of my head & free to feed my buddies when they’re hungry & not worry about my mother.

Incidentally, my next novel is THE SUBTERRANEANS coming out in N.Y. next March and is about a love affair between a white guy and a colored girl and is a very hep story. Some of the characters in it you know in the Village (Stanley Gould etc.) It easily could be turned into a play, easier than ON THE ROAD.

What I wanta do is re-do the theater and the cinema in America, give it a spontaneous dash, remove pre-conceptions of “situation” and let people rave on as they do in real life. That’s what the play is: no plot in particular, no “meaning” in particular, just the way people are. Everything I write I do in the spirit where I imagine myself an Angel returned to the earth seeing it with sad eyes as it is. I know you approve of these ideas, & incidentally the new Frank Sinatra show is based on “spontaneous” too, which is the only way to come on anyway, whether in business or life. The French movies of the 30′s are still far superior to ours because the French really let their actors come on and the writers didn’t quibble with some preconceived notion of how intelligent the movie audience is, they talked soul from soul and everybody understood at once. I want to make great French Movies in America, finally, when I’m rich… American theater & Cinema at present is an outmoded dinosaur that ain’t mutated along with the best in American Literature.

If you really want to go ahead, make arrangements to see me in New York when next you come, or if you’re going to FLorida here I am, but what we should do is talk about this because I prophesy that it’s going to be the beginning of something real great. I’m bored nowadays and I’m looking around for something to do in the world, anyway — writing novels is getting too easy, same with plays, I wrote the play in 24 hours.

Come on now, Marlon, put up your dukes and write!
Sincerely, later, Jack Kerouac⎦

Querido Marlon

⎡Sid Vicious played a four-string Fender bass guitar and couldn't sing and everybody hated him except the ones who loved him. A ukulele has four strings, but Sid did not play ukulele. He did smack and probably killed his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. If only Sid had had a ukulele, maybe he would have been happy. Maybe he would not have suffered such a sad end. He maybe would have not done all that heroin. Instead he maybe would've sat around just singing nice songs to his girlfriend.

So play your favorite cover song, especially if the words are wrong 'cause even if your grades are bad, it doesn't mean you're failing. Do your homework with a fork and eat your fruit loops in the dark and bring your etch-a-sketch to work and play your ukulele. Ukulele small and fierceful. Ukulele brave and peaceful. You can play the ukulele too, it is painfully simple. Play your ukulele badly, play your ukulele loudly. Ukulele banish evil. Ukulele save the people. Ukulele gleaming golden from the top of every steeple.

Lizzie Borden took an axe, and gave her mother forty whacks then gave her father forty-one, and left a tragic puzzle. If only they had given her an instrument, those puritans had lost the plot completely. See what happens when you muzzle a person's creativity and do not let them sing and scream. And nowadays it's worse 'cause kids have automatic handguns. It takes about an hour to teach someone to play the ukulele. About the same to teach someone to build a standard pipe bomb. You do the math.

So play your favorite cover song, especially if the words are wrong 'cause even if your grades are bad, it doesn't mean you're failing. Do your homework with a fork and eat your fruit loops in the dark and bring your flask of jack to work and play your ukulele. Ukulele, thing of wonder. Ukulele, wand of thunder. You can play the ukulele, too in London and down under play Joan Jett, and play Jacques Brel and Eminem and Neutral Milk Hotel. Tell the children. Crush the hatred. Play your ukulele naked. If anybody tries to steal your ukulele, let them take it.

Imagine there's no music, imagine there are no songs. Imagine that John Lennon wasn't shot in front of his apartment. Now imagine if John Lennon had composed "imagine" for the ukulele. Maybe people would have truly got the message. You may think my approach is simple-minded and naïve like if you want to change the world then why not quit and feed the hungry. But people for millennia have needed music to survive and that is why I promised John that I will not feel guilty.

So play your favorite Beatles song and make the subway fall in love. They're only $19.95, that isn't lots of money. Play until the sun comes up and play until your fingers suffer. Play LCD soundsystem songs on your ukulele. Quit the bitching on your blog and stop pretending art is hard. Just limit yourself to three chords and do not practice daily. You'll minimize some stranger's sadness with a piece of wood and plastic. Holy fuck, it's so fantastic, playing ukulele. Eat your homework with a fork and do your fruit loops in the dark.

Bring your etch-a-sketch to work, your flask of Jack, your vibrator, your fear of heights, your Nikon lens, your mom and dad, your disco stick, your soundtrack to "karate kid", your ginsu knives, your rosary, your new Rebecca Black CD, your favorite room, your bowie knife, your stuffed giraffe, your new glass eye, your sousaphone, your breakfast tea, your Nick Drake tapes, your giving tree, your ice cream truck, your missing wife, your will to live, your urge to cry. Remember we're all gonna die, so play your ukulele.⎦

⎡My sister and I are two uttered words

back flipping out of white lips

pronounced wrong.

By the pale men that don't love us.

And sometimes by the ones that do.

I got the feeling their skin is about the same color as my pale yellow bones

and there is everything ironic about that.

On a bad day I fall in love three times

on a good day, I lose count, and my mind,

stuffing hand written letters and my backbone, postmarked, into mailboxes
.
Hope them to be received by some land or hand that I can memorize sweet.

Putting parachutes on all my sentences

so that the skulls of my sounds may find themselves un-shattered.

And this must be how all the women in my family love

and get loved.

By dark men too

Spinned from night and knuckles.

Like Delci, mama, she's been dead almost 19 years

and her name still slides off of my dads bottom lip,

the way only property can.

I hung one of her portraits on my wall the other day

the charcoal stained my fingers blue, as if still fresh.

And this is the closest I have let myself get to her.

The homeless black men

congregate under the tallest trees in the plaza,

on my way to work.
I cringe when they pronounce my name the way my dad does,

all thick like, with cities I've only been to twice,

and split personalities I've never been formally introduced to.

like: no, I don't have a nickel or a dime, or time to

listen to my name with Brooklyn and Queens tangled up in it.

These hands of mine are still blue with the closest I'll ever be to either of my parents.

Except

now I'll trace the cadence of that blue smudge

to the spot under my pillow,

where I'll keep a dollar for every time he called her out of her name.

And a prayer,

for my sisters white boyfriend, who too often, mistakes her name for dirt.

Doesn't even check the temperature of each syllable

nor the angle by which we un-bend our backs to stand eye-level with our reflections.

With my face reflecting hers, swelled in gilt, my girl told me a week ago,

she couldn't unhinge her heart from her body long enough to swallow her man whole.

And it's sounds like those, that get this girl feeling heavy or heat covered,

or ugly.

But I know I'm pretty because the boys tell me so,

watch my legs move fast past'em cuz I hear

them yell: my thighs or my hips

these curves, that I'm about.

And I don't like the sound of my shapes in their mouths
        or these blue hands.

She must've loved her blue charcoal,

that indigo space

and don't my daddy be the bluest place.

Who told you to climb these mountains?

Who told you to let the butterflies out of my closet?

Who told you, you could hide in my jaw,

disguised as a song.⎦

⎡Mi hermana y yo somos dos palabras
en caída libre desde labios blancos

y mal pronunciadas.

Pongo paracaídas a todas mis frases
